‘Teachers see nothing’ : exploring students’ and teachers’ perspectives on school bullying with a new arts-based methodology

2020

Even though bullying is a perennial problem, there are still significant gaps in the research. The sensitive nature of the issue prompted us to develop and test a new arts-based method – a set of incomplete, problem-focused comic strips that were given to the participants for creative completion and were subsequently used as individualised interview prompts. The study took place in Russia with 14 teachers and 39 school children. The findings indicated that students and teachers agreed that instances of bullying should not be reported. However, there is a significant difference in how bullying is perceived by teachers and students. The majority of teachers indicated either seeing no bullying…

Narrativas visuales de la Facultad de Magisterio mediadas por teléfonos móviles. Una mirada pedagógica y artística a la Investigación Basada en las A…

2020

[EN] This work focuses on the visual narratives generated from images captured by art education students, as a result of projects developed in the Teaching classrooms during different academic years. In them intervenes, at first, the gaze of the students as visual producers through portable devices, mainly mobile phones, in educational environments between 2011 and 2017. The images were captured at different chronological moments and materialized on the university campuses of Ontinyent and Dels Tarongers, from the Faculty of Education. The work theoretically approximates the method of Research Based on the Arts. The images produced by the students are composed by the author and researcher t…

School Bullying Through Graphic Vignettes : Developing a New Arts-Based Method to Study a Sensitive Topic

2020

The purpose of this study was to develop a new arts-based measure assessing school bullying and to test it within a pilot study involving 19 schoolchildren (mean age = 15.4; range = 1.00). The researchers designed the new methodological tool (referred to as graphic vignettes) as a set of incomplete comic strips, which participants were asked to complete in a creative way. Researchers then invited participants to engage in follow-up interviews using completed comic strips as individualized interview prompts. The authors detail the design and administration of the graphic vignettes and discuss their efficacy, limitations, and potential applications. The researchers argue that studies on sensi…

Anchoring Belonging Through Material Practices in Participatory Arts-Based Research

2020

How do people understand belonging and what kinds of stances toward belonging do they take? What kind of knowledge or ways of knowing (EISNER, 2008) does artistic practice yield about belonging? We ask these questions in this article, which is based on the research project Crossing Borders, in which we used participatory arts-based methods to study belonging. We invited participants to explore the notion of belonging in three parallel workshops drawing on different art forms, film, writing and visual arts. The goal of the workshops was for each participant to produce an artwork that deals with belonging. In the article, we identify four stances that the participants expressed toward the con…
